Definition
To indicate or mean beforehand; to signify or suggest in advance what is to come.
Etymology
Fore- (before) + signify (to mean or indicate meaning). The -fy suffix comes from Latin -ficare (to make), so foresignify literally means 'to make-sign-before,' a highly formal construction.
Kelly Says
This is a word that shows the exhausting precision of Early Modern English—when 'foreshadow' wasn't quite specific enough about the meaning-bearing aspect of prediction, writers added 'signify' to emphasize semantic content, yet the word was stillborn in actual usage.
