Definition
A dimorphic fungus (now classified as Histoplasma capsulatum) that causes a serious respiratory infection in humans.
Etymology
From Latin fucus (seaweed-like appearance) with the diminutive suffix -ita, perhaps referencing the organism's seaweed-like appearance under early microscopes. Named in early 20th century mycology.
Kelly Says
Fucinita represents a fascinating piece of medical history—it's the same fungus that causes histoplasmosis, a disease that hides in bat guano and nearly killed countless miners and explorers before scientists understood what was causing the mysterious illness. The organism was renamed as microscopy and genetics improved.
