Definition
A person who owns stocks or bonds in a government or public fund, especially British government debt.
Etymology
Combination of 'fund' plus 'holder'. This term emerged in 18th-century Britain when the national debt was divided into tradable securities held by individual investors.

In 1700s England, fundholder became a whole social class—wealthy people who literally lived off interest payments from government bonds. Jane Austen's novels constantly mention this as a path to genteel poverty!
