Definition
Plural of funicle; multiple small cord-like or rope-like structures, especially seed stalks in plants.
Etymology
Plural form of funicle, from Latin funiculus (small rope). In botanical Latin, funiculi would be the technical plural, but English uses the Anglicized 'funicles.'
Kelly Says
Looking at the inside of a tomato or pepper and seeing all those little thread-like strands connecting the seeds to the fruit wall—those are all funicles, and they're visible proof of the remarkable engineering that goes into developing seeds.
