Gadite

/ˈɡædaɪt/ noun

Definition

In biblical and historical contexts, a member of the tribe of Gad in ancient Israel, or a mineral form of gadolinium compounds.

Etymology

From the biblical tribe name Gad (one of the twelve tribes of Israel) plus -ite (a suffix for tribal members or mineral forms). The mineral usage came later in chemistry.

Kelly Says

The Bible's tribe of Gad was known as fierce warriors—their territory was east of the Jordan River, and they maintained a strong military presence, which is why 'Gadite' appears frequently in biblical military narratives and archaeological discussions of ancient Israel.
