Etymology
From gastro- (stomach) + helcosis (from Greek helkos, ulcer or wound). This term combines the Greek word for ulcer with the stomach prefix to describe the condition of ulcer formation specifically in gastric tissue.

Gastrohelcosis—the fancy name for stomach ulcers—reminds us that for centuries, people suffered from these painful conditions without knowing they were caused by bacteria (Helicobacter pylori).
