Definition
Excessive secretion of watery fluid or gastric juices from the stomach.
Etymology
From gastro- (stomach) + hydro- (Greek hydor, water) + -rrhea (Greek rhoia, flow or discharge). This medical term describes an abnormal condition where the stomach produces too much fluid, often in response to disease or irritation.

In the early 1900s, doctors could diagnose gastrohydrorrhea by inserting a tube into the stomach and collecting the fluid—a pretty uncomfortable procedure! Today we know this excessive secretion can be a sign of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare condition where a tumor makes the stomach work overtime.
