Definition
Relating to or derived from gentian plants, or referring to gentisic acid and its related compounds.
Etymology
From gentian (Latin gentiana) plus the chemical suffix -ic. The term was developed by chemists studying the active constituents of gentian root preparations.
Kelly Says
Gentisic acid is a close chemical cousin of salicylic acid (used in acne treatments), which shows how plant chemistry and medicine are deeply intertwined. Scientists discovered these relationships by literally analyzing what traditional healers already knew worked.
