Definition
A contagious bacterial disease of horses and other animals, characterized by inflammation of the mucous membranes and formation of nodules.
Etymology
From gland + -ers suffix (meaning disease of glands). Named for the swollen glands it produces, particularly in the nasal passages and lungs of infected animals.
Kelly Says
Glanders was so feared historically that it appears in military historical records and veterinary textbooks from centuries ago—it's one of the few diseases named directly for the glands it attacks.
