Definition
People who play golf, a sport where players use various clubs to hit a small ball into holes on a course in the fewest strokes possible.
Etymology
From 'golf' plus plural suffix '-ers'. The word 'golf' possibly derives from Dutch 'kolf' meaning club or stick, or from Scottish Gaelic 'goulf' meaning to strike or cuff. The sport originated in Scotland in the 15th century.
Kelly Says
Professional golfers can hit a ball over 300 yards with incredible precision, but the sport's scoring system is uniquely backwards - the goal is the lowest score possible. Golf is also one of only two sports played on the moon, when astronaut Alan Shepard hit golf balls during the Apollo 14 mission in 1971.
