Gothicist

/ˈɡɒθɪsɪst/ noun

Definition

A person who studies, advocates for, or specializes in Gothic art, architecture, or culture.

Etymology

From Gothic (relating to the Goths or medieval Gothic style) + -ist (one who practices or believes in). The Gothic architectural revival became popular in the 18th century, creating demand for specialized scholars.

Kelly Says

The 18th-century Gothic Revival created an entirely new class of scholars—gothicists—who loved towers and pointed arches so much they made careers out of studying them. It's like how video games created the word 'speedrunner'—new cultural phenomena literally invent new job titles.
