Definition
A composite material or alloy that contains graphite; a metal alloy reinforced with graphite particles for improved properties.
Etymology
From 'graph-' (short for graphite, from Greek 'graphites' meaning writing stone, from 'graphein' to write) plus 'alloy' (from Old French 'aloi'). This is a technical compound combining a material name with its modification.

Graphite got its name because people originally thought they could write with it—the word literally means 'writing stone' in Greek. Only later did scientists realize it was pure carbon, not lead, but the misleading name stuck around, showing how scientific names sometimes preserve historical misconceptions.
