Graveling

/ˈɡrævəlɪŋ/ noun

Definition

A young trout or fish; the stage of a fish's life when it's small and developing.

Etymology

From Middle English, possibly related to gravel (the small stones found in streambeds). Young fish were called graveling because they were often found in gravelly stream beds.

Kelly Says

Trout fishermen still use 'graveling' to describe juvenile fish, and these little ones are actually super important—they're what keep fisheries healthy and are key to understanding stream ecosystems.
