Definition
A zoological term for a group of hydroids or colonial marine animals with exposed (naked) reproductive buds or gonophores.
Etymology
From Greek gymnos (naked) + blastea (buds or sprouts), referring to exposed generative structures. The term emerged in 19th-century marine biology classification.
Kelly Says
Zoologists named tiny ocean creatures based on whether their sex organs were 'dressed' or 'naked'—using the same ancient Greek concept, but now applied to microscopic marine life!
