A genus of parasitic flatworms that attach to fish gills and skin using a circular disc with hooks, causing significant damage to aquaculture.
Etymology
Scientific name from gyro- (Greek 'circle') and dactylus (Greek 'finger' or 'claw'). First described in the 19th century as a fish pathogen.
