An early or alternative term for an autopilot system that uses gyroscopic principles to automatically maintain an aircraft's orientation and level flight.
Etymology
From 'gyro' (gyroscope) + 'pilot'. A compound word describing automatic flight control systems based on spinning gyroscope technology.

Early airplane autopilots were literally mechanical gyroscopes spinning inside the aircraft—pilots called them 'gyropilots,' and they could hold an aircraft level even when the human pilot was exhausted.
