Definition
A medical condition in which blood accumulates in the space between the lungs and chest wall, usually due to injury or trauma.
Etymology
From Greek 'haima' (blood) + 'thorax' (chest). This compound term literally describes what's happening—blood in the chest cavity where it shouldn't be.
Kelly Says
Haemothorax is a life-threatening emergency because blood filling the chest cavity compresses the lungs, making it impossible to breathe. Doctors must drain it quickly, making it one of the conditions where medical speed literally saves lives.
