Hapi

/ˈhɑpi/ noun

Definition

Hapi was the ancient Egyptian god of the Nile River's flooding and annual inundation, considered essential to Egyptian agriculture and civilization.

Etymology

From ancient Egyptian, the name of the Nile flood god, sometimes spelled 'Hapy' or 'Hapi.' The name possibly means 'the one who runs' or relates to concepts of flowing water. This deity was worshipped for over 3,000 years in Egyptian civilization.

Kelly Says

The ancient Egyptians built their entire civilization around waiting for Hapi's flooding—if the flood came too high or too low, crops failed and people starved, so Hapi was arguably more important to Egyptian survival than the Pharaoh himself.
