Etymology
From Greek harmozein 'to fit together, join' + temnein 'to cut.' The name refers to the mineral's property of splitting along natural planes—the cuts 'fit together' perfectly. Named by mineralogists in the 19th century.

Harmotome is one of the few minerals whose name actually describes how it behaves—'harmotome' literally means 'cutting in harmony' because it breaks along perfect planes like it was meant to separate there. It's mostly used by collectors now, but it's a beautiful reminder that mineralogists were poets with their naming.
