Definition
A Scottish and Northern English exclamation expressing surprise, dismay, or mild protest.
Etymology
Scottish variant of 'heck,' itself a euphemistic alteration of 'hell,' used in dialects of Northern Britain since at least the 16th century.
Kelly Says
Every dialect has its own colorful ways to avoid saying something too harsh—'hech' is Scotland's clever workaround, and it tells us how communities develop their own word customs!
