Definition
A pore or opening that allows light to enter, often referring to pores in ancient organisms or in heliopora corals.
Etymology
From Greek helios (sun) + poros (pore or passage). Poros comes from the same root as English 'porous,' and appears in scientific terms naming passages or openings.
Kelly Says
Some ancient sponges and corals had specialized heliopores that let light penetrate to photosynthetic algae living inside their bodies—a kind of farming arrangement where the animal provides shelter and gets food in return!
