A sloping surface or pathway, particularly one used historically for sliding logs downhill or used as a rough sledding track.
Etymology
From Old Norse 'hella' meaning 'to slope or lean,' related to the Proto-Germanic root meaning 'to lean.' The term was especially used in Scandinavian timber industries where it described slopes used for transporting wood.

In Norwegian and Swedish forests, 'hellings' were engineering marvels—workers would ice and maintain steep slopes to slide massive logs down mountains, saving labor and money long before modern machinery existed.
