Definition
A genus of aquatic insects, particularly diving beetles, adapted to wetland and marshy habitats.
Etymology
From Greek 'helos' (marsh) + '-odes' (resembling). The genus name reflects the organisms' primary habitat preference for swampy and wetland environments.
Kelly Says
Helodes beetles are incredible underwater engineers—their larvae have specialized adaptations for extracting oxygen from murky marsh water, and some species can detect prey underwater using vibrations through their antennae.
