Definition
To reduce someone to the status of a helot, or serf; to enslave or make into a laborer bound to the land.
Etymology
From helot (a serf in ancient Sparta) plus the suffix -ize. Helot comes from Greek heílōs, originally meaning a captive or slave. The -ize suffix means to make or cause to become something.
Kelly Says
The Spartans literally called their enslaved population 'helots,' and this word captures how ancient Greek society was built on brutal servitude—something that made Sparta militarily powerful but morally catastrophic.
