Definition
A condition in which vision is lost or diminished in half of the visual field in one or both eyes, often caused by brain damage or stroke.
Etymology
From Greek hemi- (half) + -opia (condition of vision, from ops meaning 'eye'), literally 'half-vision,' describing loss of sight in one half of the visual field.
Kelly Says
Hemiopia reveals how much of seeing happens in the brain rather than the eye—patients can have perfectly healthy eyes but lose half their world because the brain's vision centers are damaged.
