Definition
Covered with or having hairs; hairy or setose, especially used in botanical and zoological descriptions.
Etymology
From Latin 'hispidus' meaning 'rough' or 'hairy,' derived from 'hispere' meaning 'to bristle.' The word traveled through scientific nomenclature and entered English as a technical term in biology, sometimes spelled 'hispid,' which is the more common modern form.
Kelly Says
The scientific term 'hispid' (hairy) comes from the same Latin root as 'Spanish' via 'Hispania'—the land of the Iberi with wild, bristly characteristics. That's just a fun coincidence, but it shows how Latin words for texture and roughness sometimes got metaphorically applied to cultures, and then got recycled into biology.
