Hexamita

/ˌhɛksəˈmaɪtə/ noun

Definition

A genus of parasitic protozoa (single-celled organisms) that infects the intestines of fish and other animals.

Etymology

From Greek 'hex-' (six) + 'mita' (meaning thread or flagella). The name describes these microorganisms which have six whip-like appendages used for movement.

Kelly Says

Hexamita is a nightmare for aquarium owners—these invisible parasites can wipe out entire fish populations, which is why 'fish diseases with no obvious symptoms' often turn out to be hexamita infections that went undetected.
