Definition
Plural of Indian; people from India, or historically used to refer to indigenous peoples of the Americas (now considered outdated).
Etymology
From 'India' + plural '-s'. The term arose from Columbus's mistaken belief he had reached the Indies, leading to the misnomer for Native Americans that persisted for centuries.
Kelly Says
The confusion between 'Indians' (from India) and 'Indians' (Native Americans) led to the term 'American Indian' and eventually the more accurate 'Native American' - showing how one navigation error created centuries of linguistic confusion!
