Definition
Unwilling or refusing to change one's views or to agree to a compromise; uncompromisingly stubborn. Describes someone who will not negotiate or modify their position.
Etymology
From Spanish 'intransigente,' used to describe a radical political party that refused to compromise. From Latin 'in-' (not) + 'transigere' (to come to an agreement), from 'trans-' (across) + 'agere' (to drive). Literally means 'not driving across' to meet others halfway.
Kelly Says
Break down 'in-TRANS-igent'—they won't 'transition' or move across to meet you! Think of someone who plants their feet and refuses to budge from their position, no matter what. They won't 'trans-act' or work across differences.
