Definition
A country on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea in northern Europe, with a population that speaks Latvian.
Etymology
The English name 'Latvia' comes from the Latvian 'Latvija,' derived from 'Latvi,' the historical name of the people, which possibly relates to 'lauts' (people) in Proto-Baltic languages.
Kelly Says
Latvia's name itself is relatively modern—the territory was called many different things (Livonia, Courland, etc.) by foreign powers until the 20th century, and Latvia declared independence in 1918 partly by reclaiming its own ethnic name over colonial ones—a linguistic act of sovereignty that matters more than many people realize.
