/ˈlɪbiən/ adjective

Definition

Relating to Libya, a North African country, or its people and culture. Can also be used as a noun to refer to a person from Libya.

Etymology

From Latin Libya, which came from Greek Libya, referring to the land west of Egypt. The Greeks named it after the Libu people, one of the ancient Berber tribes of the region.

Kelly Says

Ancient Greeks used 'Libya' to refer to all of North Africa west of Egypt, making it one of the oldest continental names still in use. The region was home to ancient civilizations including Carthage and was a crucial part of Roman trade routes.
