Manchu

/ˈmænˌtʃuː/ adjective

Definition

Relating to the Manchus, an ethnic group from northeastern China who founded the Qing Dynasty that ruled China from 1644-1912.

Etymology

From Manchuria, the region in northeastern China. The Manchus were originally the Jurchen people who adopted 'Manchu' as their ethnonym when establishing their empire.

Kelly Says

The Manchu conquest of China was so complete they forced all Chinese men to wear Manchu-style queue hairstyles (long braids)—refusing meant execution, so within a generation, the whole country looked Manchu!
