Mews

/mjuz/ noun

Definition

A row of houses converted from former stables, typically found in British cities. Originally referred to the stables themselves, particularly those where hawks were kept.

Etymology

From Middle English 'mewe' meaning 'cage for hawks,' from Old French 'mue' meaning 'molt, change.' The word shifted from referring to hawk houses to horse stables, then to converted residential properties in the 20th century.

Kelly Says

London's mews houses were originally built behind grand Georgian and Victorian townhouses to stable horses and house servants. Today, these former stables are among the most expensive and sought-after properties in the city, with their cobblestone streets and intimate scale!
