Model view controller

Definition

An architectural pattern that separates application logic into three interconnected components: Model (data and business logic), View (user interface), and Controller (handles user input and coordinates between Model and View). This separation promotes code organization and maintainability.

Etymology

Introduced by Trygve Reenskaug at Xerox PARC in 1978-79 for Smalltalk applications, originally called 'Model-View-Editor'. The pattern gained widespread adoption with web frameworks in the 1990s-2000s, becoming a fundamental architecture for interactive applications.

Kelly Says

MVC is like a restaurant: the Model is the kitchen (where food is prepared and stored), the View is the dining room (what customers see), and the Controller is the waiter (takes orders from customers and coordinates with the kitchen)! This separation means you can redesign the dining room without changing recipes, or hire new waiters without rebuilding the kitchen.
