Definition
Buildings where collections of art, historical objects, or scientific specimens are displayed for people to view and learn from.
Etymology
From Greek 'mouseion' (temple of the Muses, or place of the Muses), from 'mousa' (Muse). Originally meant a place of learning and contemplation dedicated to the nine Muses of Greek mythology.
Kelly Says
The word 'museum' literally means 'temple of the Muses'—so every modern science museum or art gallery is technically a sacred space for learning, a meaning preserved in the word from when Greeks actually built sanctuaries dedicated to inspiration and knowledge.
