Definition
Plural of mustang; small, hardy horses of the American plains, descended from Spanish horses and living in feral herds.
Etymology
From Mexican Spanish mestengo, meaning 'stray animal', ultimately from Latin mixtus (mixed). The word reflects the mixed breeding of escaped Spanish horses in the American West.
Kelly Says
Mustangs aren't truly wild horses - they're feral descendants of domestic Spanish horses brought by conquistadors 500 years ago. These amazing animals can survive in harsh desert conditions and have become symbols of American freedom and independence.
