Definition
A drug or potion described in Homer's Odyssey as banishing grief and sorrow; anything that makes you forget pain and suffering.
Etymology
From Greek 'nepenthes' — 'ne-' (not) + 'penthos' (grief/sorrow). Helen of Troy gave it to Telemachus to ease his pain. Poe used it in 'The Raven': 'Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe!'
Kelly Says
Helen of Troy had a potion that made you FORGET ALL SADNESS! Homer described it in the Odyssey and Poe begged for it in 'The Raven!' The ultimate comfort — a drink that dissolves sorrow! Literature's original antidepressant! ðŸºâœ¨
