Definition
Initial offers or proposals made to start a negotiation, relationship, or agreement; also, the orchestral introduction to an opera or musical composition.
Etymology
From Old French 'overture' meaning 'opening,' derived from Latin 'apertura' (opening). Originally referred to the opening movement of a musical work, then extended to mean any opening move or proposal in dealing with someone.
Kelly Says
The word perfectly captures a musical and social parallel: just as an overture sets the tone for an entire opera, a diplomatic overture in politics or love can determine everything that follows. Napoleon and Churchill both made famous overtures to each other that changed the course of history.
