Definition
To act insincerely; to speak misleadingly; to trifle with or equivocate.
Etymology
Of uncertain origin, possibly from dialectal English 'palt' (rag/trash). Shakespeare used it in Antony and Cleopatra: 'Let not the piece of virtue which is set / Betwixt us, as the cement of our love / To keep it builded, be the ram to batter / The fortress of it; for better might we / Have loved without this mean, if on both parts / This be not cherished.' To palter is to use truthful statements to create a false impression.
Kelly Says
Sneakier than lying! Paltering means using TRUE facts to create FALSE impressions! Every misleading statistic, every half-truth, every 'technically correct' dodge — that's paltering! Politicians do it ALL the time! 🎭🤥
