Definition
A way of expressing a number as a part of 100. For example, 25 percent means 25 out of every 100.
Etymology
From Medieval Latin “per centum” meaning “by the hundred.” The idea spread through European trade and finance, where comparing amounts out of 100 made calculations easier.
Kelly Says
Percent is just a fancy way to say “out of 100,” so 50% is literally “50 per 100.” Once you see it that way, many ‘hard’ percentage problems become simple fraction problems.
