Definition
An informal and insulting word for a person with inappropriate sexual interests or behavior.
Etymology
Short for 'pervert,' which comes from Latin pervortere (per- 'thoroughly' + vertere 'to turn'). The slang abbreviation became common in 20th-century English as a shortened, more casual insult.
Kelly Says
Language often shortens words we use to insult people we want to distance ourselves from—'perv,' 'creep,' and similar terms are truncated precisely to make them feel dismissive and dehumanizing, which is linguistically interesting even if morally questionable.
