Phylum

/ˈfaɪləm/ noun

Definition

A major taxonomic division within a kingdom, grouping organisms that share a similar body plan or organizational structure. It represents the second-highest level of classification below kingdom.

Etymology

From Greek 'phylon' meaning 'tribe' or 'race,' introduced into biological taxonomy in the 19th century. The term was chosen to represent major evolutionary lineages that diverged early in the history of life.

Kelly Says

All animals with backbones - from tiny fish to massive whales to humans - belong to the same phylum (Chordata), while all insects, spiders, and crabs belong to a completely different phylum (Arthropoda)! It's amazing how body plans unite such diverse creatures.
