Definition
Outdoor meals where people bring food and eat together in a park or natural area.
Etymology
From French 'pique-nique,' possibly from 'piquer' (to pick/peck) and 'nique' (a trifle). The word spread through English in the 1700s and originally meant a fashionable social gathering where everyone brought a dish.
Kelly Says
Picnics started as a way for wealthy French people to show off—everyone brought their finest foods and wine—but they've become humanity's favorite excuse to eat outdoors and pretend ants aren't stealing our food!
