Pinot

/ˈpiːnoʊ/ noun

Definition

A type of grape variety used in winemaking, most famously Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio. The name refers to the pine cone-shaped clusters of grapes.

Etymology

From French, literally meaning 'pine cone,' from pin 'pine' + the diminutive suffix -ot. The grape variety got this name because its tight clusters resemble small pine cones. The variety is ancient, possibly originating in Burgundy over 1,000 years ago.

Kelly Says

Pinot grapes are among the most finicky and terroir-sensitive varieties, which makes the simple 'pine cone' etymology charming in its understatement. These grapes are so genetically unstable that they constantly mutate, giving us the family of Pinot varieties—it's like the grape world's shape-shifter, always adapting to new conditions.
