Christians who follow the Protestant branch of Christianity, which began when reformers protested against the Roman Catholic Church in the 1500s.
Etymology
From the Latin 'protestari' meaning to protest or declare formally. The word originally referred to princes who 'protested' the decisions of the Diet of Speyer in 1529 against the Catholic Church's authority.
