Puffs

/pʌfs/ noun

Definition

Plural of puff: short, quick bursts of air or wind, or small pieces of light pastry.

Etymology

From Old English 'pyffan,' an imitative word that mimics the sound of blowing air. The word has been used since around 1000 AD and naturally came to refer to the products of such actions.

Kelly Says

Puff is one of English's best onomatopoeia words—it literally sounds like what it means, which is why it's also used for smoke, breath, and even the Puff Pastry technique!
