Regatta

/rɪˈɡætə/ noun

Definition

A boat race or series of boat races, especially for sailing or rowing.

Etymology

From Venetian Italian 'regata' meaning a contest or struggle, first used for gondola races on the Grand Canal in Venice. The word entered English in the 17th century as these organized water competitions spread to other countries.

Kelly Says

The world's oldest regatta is the Palio di San Ranieri in Pisa, dating back to 1293. Venice's historic regattas were so spectacular that they inspired royal courts across Europe to create their own water festivals, making boat racing a aristocratic pastime.
