Screen-pass

/skrin pæs/ noun

Definition

A short passing play where offensive linemen allow pass rushers through, then move downfield to block for a receiver who catches a short pass behind the line of scrimmage. The play uses the defense's aggression against them.

Etymology

From 'screen' meaning a protective barrier, as the linemen form a blocking screen for the receiver. The concept developed in the 1940s as coaches sought ways to neutralize aggressive pass rushes.

Kelly Says

Screen passes are football's ultimate trap play, turning defensive strength into weakness by letting rushers think they're winning before springing the surprise. The timing requires perfect coordination between five linemen, a quarterback, and a receiver - a symphony of deception.
