Shetland

/ˈʃɛtlənd/ proper noun/adjective

Definition

Referring to the Shetland Islands of Scotland, or things originating from there, especially Shetland ponies or Shetland wool.

Etymology

From Old Norse 'Hjaltland' meaning 'high land,' which evolved through Scots to 'Zetland' and then 'Shetland.' The islands were under Norse rule for over 600 years before becoming Scottish in 1469.

Kelly Says

Shetland ponies are incredibly strong for their size—they can pull twice their own weight! These hardy little horses were originally used in coal mines because they were small enough to work in narrow tunnels, and their gentle nature made them perfect for the dangerous underground work.
