Straights

/streɪts/ noun

Definition

Narrow passages of water connecting two larger bodies of water, or situations where someone is in difficulty or has limited options.

Etymology

From Old French estreit, Latin strictus, meaning 'narrow' or 'tight.' Originally described geography, but evolved metaphorically to describe any narrow or confined situation. The plural form can mean multiple waterways or multiple difficult circumstances.

Kelly Says

The Strait of Malacca is one of the world's most important shipping routes—a geographical chokepoint so critical that controlling it has shaped empires and modern geopolitics.
